## What it is for

A producer, publisher, brand or manufacturer often knows the work it wants (a photograph, a clip, a recording, a typeface, a patent family) but not who controls the rights or what a licence for its use would cost. Rights divide by territory, term and media, and an unlicensed use is expensive. Set out the work, the use, the territory, the term and the media, which is what a rights holder needs before naming a fee.

## What happens next

You get a reference number and your licence request in writing. We look at every requirement, and when we can identify the rights holder or a licensing agent, we reply to the email you leave. Nothing here says who owns a work. Nothing is ordered or committed until you agree terms. Contact details are kept apart from the requirement and deleted after 180 days.
